I’ve got a friend who is in multimedia designing and he was really good at it - no doubt about that. He once told me that he wants to be a millionaire and owns his own Ferrari. So I ask him how he is going to do that? Owning a Ferrari in my country is very expensive and it will cost him at least SGD$800,000. At that time, I haven’t been exposure to the fact that being rich can be a reality. I totally knew nothing and thought owning a Ferrari is just a fantasy.
Few years later, I met this friend again and I asked him how was he doing. He was doing ok but not to the extend of getting his Ferrari. I was shocked, few years back, he was a driven young man and now his circumstances has changed and didn’t want to be rich any more. All he wants was a simple life doing the things he love. I’m glad to see him happy with what he is doing now - we still hang out occasionally.
Did my friend choose to live life simple and stop entertaining the possibilities of being rich? Or did he just say he couldn’t do it? I do not know. I did not ask further.
I Can’t Afford It
“Would you like to own your own Ferrari? Yes! But I can’t afford it.”
That’s probably a very common answer you will get from people who wants something but somehow didn’t get it. By saying “I can’t afford it”, it limits your ability to think and expand your thoughts. It puts a stop to your thinking process, of course you are not going to get what you want.
How Can I Afford It?
Instead, try asking yourself “How can I afford it?”. This way it expands your thinking! You thought process starts to kick in, your mind start to generate ideas on how you can get from point A to point B. That’s how you start finding possibilities around you.
A simple change in mindset can make a lot of difference so start asking yourself “How you can afford it” and not just “I can’t afford it”.

Terry,
Excellent post!
How can I afford it is the difference between people who get what they want out of life and people who accept what life throws at them. This also doesn’t just apply with financial stuff. Some people say “I can’t be a great recruiter” as oppose to saying “How can I be a top recruiter.” Some people say “I can’t do this internet marketing stuff” as oppose to saying “How can I do this internet marketing stuff?”
I just had this same conversation with my wife the other day. We had a dip last year in our real estate business and I was explaining to her that the reason why the dip took place is because her and our partner lost their belief in the way they were doing real estate at the time. They kept saying “We can’t do this” and “We can’t do that” and it became a self-fulfilling prophecy.
Now they are working on a different way of doing real estate and they have a much better positive attitude about it. Instead of saying “We can’t do this” or “We can’t do that” they are now saying “How can we do this?” and “How can we do that?” I have no doubts that if they continue to have that type of attitude this year will be our highest grossing year from the real estate business.
